This variety is grown in the
tobacco producing areas of the Arsuz district in the county of Iskenderun, at Meydan in
Samandağ as well as in the Hadım district, in the Konya county. These tobaccos
are smoked with water pipes.
The leaves of this variety
are large. Some of them medium size, with winged petioles, rounded in shape and broad in
their lower halves. Their colour varies between light and dark shades of red with dark red
dapples on the surface of their leaves. The texture of the leaves is gummy and thick, the
midribs are prominent. They have a satisfying and sweet taste and a pleasant aroma.
After the heaves are cut
into rather broad shreds, scaked with water and squeezed by hand, they are placed on top
of the water pipe. A piece of glowing charcoal is put over it and the water pipe is ready
to be enjoyed.
These tobaccos are mostly used in Iran, the
Arab Peninsula, India, Turkey and in small quantities in Greece.
