SAMSUN CANIK

Samsun Canik

This variety is produced in the hinterland of Samsun and in the area just beyond the production belt of Maden. Being scattered between Maden and Çarşamba, this tobacco variety is mostly produced on the rising slopes located on the west side of the delta of the Yeşilırmak River.

The leaves of Canik tobaccos are small sized, broad winged and ox-tongue shaped. The texture and veins of these leaves are fine as well as highly elastic and durable. Their bright colour is from light to dark red. Their taste is satisfying an sweet and has a slightly spiced specific aroma, but the Sıtmasuyu type however has a strong and definite aroma. The Canik variety has therefore a worldwide reputation among aromatic tobaccos. These tobaccos are necessary for high quality blends due to the above characteristics. They have also a high combustibility and filling capacity.

In view of their taste they can be blended in certain proportions with cigar fillers. They add sweetness to the cigars and eliminate the harshness of immature cigar fillers, increasing their taste quality.

Their 1.25 % nicotine content gives to the taste a slightly satisfying character.

The type of this variety produced in the Çarşamba district resembles the above mentioned Canik type, inasmuch as its physical characteristics and taste are concerned.

The soil of the region where these tobaccos are produced is broken land and covered with brown forest earth. The actual consistency of the soil is the same as the scil of the cultivation area of the Maden variety.

As to the climatic conditions for the Canik variety during the growing stage of the tobacco the average temperature is 21.4º C, total rainfall 218.3 mm. And average relative humidity 75 %.

Çarşamba has the same average conditions, but a total rainfall of 264 mm.

Farmers stack their tobacco in the "dizi" method. Each of the bales average in weight between 15-20 kgs. Commercial bales after processing are in small tongas and weight 20-25 kgs. each.
