Cigar type
tobaccos are grown in the Eastern Black Sea region in and around the Pazar district on the
uneven slopes of the North Anatolian mountains, stretching towards the sea coast.
Although this variety was
originally bred from Wisconsin tobacco seeds, due to the ecologic conditions of the region
they have undergone some changes. This tobaccos has to be topped.
Growing in a climate, where
heavy rainfalls are predominant and the relative humidity is high, the Pazar cigar
tobaccos have a big size leaf, wide wings, slightly broad and rather long. They have an
extremely thin, and elastic texture and are very resistant to stress. They feel silky to
the touch. While their midribs are fairly thick, the veins are practically invisible.
The spaces between the main
veins are wide. The leaves are mostly from light to dark brown in colour. Some of the
leaves are of a greenish brown colour which is even.
The taste of this tobacco is
satisfying and has entirely the character and aroma of cigar tobaccos. They are used
binders and wrappers as well as fillers for cigars. Due to their highly elastic texture
and the wide space between the main veins, these tobaccos are are very suitable as
wrappers for cigars. Their ashes are white and amassing. Their nicotine content is between
1-1.5 %.
Cigar tobaccos grow on
uneven. Red coloured, podzolic soils. The soil is mainly composed of various constituents,
derived from sandstones. volcanic and sedimentary rocks. Top soil is grayish Brown in
colour, sandy loams of an acid character and quite sallow.
Average temperature during
the growing stage is 21.1º C, total rainfall 783.5 mm. and average relative humidity 81
%.
The growers stack their
tobaccos in the Iskenderiye method, the bales weighing 10-15 kgs. After processing, the
tobaccos are commercially baled in the Iskenderiye method, the bales weighing 20 kgs.
