This tobacco is produced in the Thrace region which is the European
part of Turkey. The main tobacco producing areas in this region are centred around the
districts of Kırklareli, Edirne, Uzunköprü, Şarköy, Babaeski, Lüleburgaz, Tekirdağ
and Çorlu.
This tobacco has medium
size, broad and sessile (kabakulak) leaves. Their texture is usually of moderate thickness
and elastic. They are light red, red and dark red in colour.
Their taste is strong and
slightly sweet, giving strength to the cigarettes and improving the- cutting property of
the blends. They are suitable for hand rolled cigarette blends. Their combustibility and
filling capacity are good and they have a spicy aroma of heir own. The Edirne variety is
an improved and selected type of kabakulak tobacco. While they resemble in outlook to the Balıkesir tobaccos, they have many distinct differences in
several of their properties.
These tobaccos are grown in
the rolling hills of the Thrace region. During quite dry and hot summer seasons following
cold winters. Due to these climatic conditions. Edirne tobaccos are close textured and
resistant to stress.
The Edirne variety can be
classified as one of the strangest tobaccos regarding taste, followed immediately by the
Trabzon variety. Their nicotine content is approx. 1.5- 2 %
The main constituents of the
soil in this area are olive coloured, loamy stones and siliceous stones or a combination
of gravel and sand.
Top soil is brown, grayish
brown or yellow-brown in colour, fine sandy loams and lcams, friable, having a neuter of
slightly alkaline reaction and being as deep as 16-25 cm.
Average temperature during
the growing stage is 21.7º C, total rainfall 104.8 mm. and average relative humidity 65
%.
Farmers stack their tobaccos
in the Rumeli method in 15-30 kgs. bales. After processing. Commercial baling is
undertaken again in the Rumeli method and this time each of the bales weigh either 15,20
or 30 kgs.
