This is a variety which is being produced in the districts of Adıyaman, Pertek, Malatya,
Akçadağ, Siverek, Kahta and Hozat of the Eastern region.
The sessile (kabakulak)
leaves of this tobacco are medium and sometimes large and wide at the upper half. They
have a moderately thick texture and are yellow, light red colour. The midribs of the
leaves are rather prominent compared with other varieties, veins are of a moderate
thickness.
Their taste is rather
strong. Sweet – and strong. Or satisfying. They resemble the Virginia type tobaccos
regarding taste and aroma characteristics. They add strength, sweetness and aroma to the
blends, and can be well used in pipe tobacco blends. These tobaccos have a moderate
filling capacity and combustibility.
Their nicotine content is
approx. 2 %. They are very rich in sugar and can be classified among those tobaccos with
the least protein content.
The types of this variety
produced at and around the Malatya and Akçadağ districts are somehow different in their
characteristics and are ox-tongue shaped. These tobaccos have slightly lower qualities.
The Bulam and Celikan villages produce the best tobaccos.
The land of this region is
predominantly rough and uneven. The top soil is grayish brown or brown in colour, loamy,
granular, friable and strongly calcareous. It is as deep as 8-15 cm.
The average temperature
during the growing stage is 24.6º C, total rainfall 26 mm. and average relative humidity
33 %.
Farmers stack their tobacco in approx. 30
kgs. weighing bales made in the Iskenderiye method. Commercial baling, after processing,
is done in the same method and the bales are of the same weight.
